CBD Salve for Pain

Let’s start with the definition of a salve. A salve is a medicine-infused concoction wherein one applies the medicine (in this case CBD) directly to the skin. Some people also refer to them as ointments or balms. These are for topical use as opposed to CBD oils which are meant to be ingested.

Ingested vs Topical CBD

Basically CBD oils are made to be ingested into the body. That is in order to get into the bloodstream where it can move about the body and interact with the Endocannabinoid system. This can happen in 3 ways.

  • Sublingual: by holding the oil beneath the tongue for 60-90 seconds before being swallowed. This way, it can be absorbed directly into the body via the mucous membranes in the mouth.
  • Ingestion: Swallowing: the CBD, in either oil or capsule form, is swallowed and passes through the digestive system and liver before entering the bloodstream.
  • Inhalation: through vaping the CBD molecules go directly into the bloodstream via the lungs.

These methods each have their pros and cons as to which is the best. The time it takes to get into the bloodstream and how effective it is are the biggest factors.

Salves are products that are made to be absorbed into the body topically. That is, by external application directly through the skin.

Salves

For this article we will be concentrating on salves and how they work. Studies show that trans dermal CBD application has therapeutic potential for the relief of arthritis pain and inflammation. Here is where the differences between salves and oils become important. Taken internally, the CBD takes some time before it can be applied to the pain and inflammation areas in the body. Whereas, if applied directly to the troubled areas topically, it can have a more immediate effect.

When applied topically, CBD does not have to get to the bloodstream to be effective. Instead, it can interact directly with the Endocannabinoid receptors in the skin. This brings us to how salves are concocted in order to be absorbed through the skin. Which, after all is the body’s first line of defense.

All salves have 3 types of ingredients. 1) a natural wax 2) a fatty oil base and 3) a therapeutic or medicinal component. The wax (normally beeswax) is basically to bind the salve ingredients together. The fatty oils work as a carrier for the medicinal component which is CBD in this case. Generally the more fatty acids in an oil is the more CBD it can carry. Also, the skin is quick to absorb these lipids based oils. Many salves also contain additional herbs, vitamins and minerals.

Salves are generally a good choice for muscular and joint pain and skin specific conditions.

Kannaway Salve

In their own words: “Kannaway Salve is a vegan topical product that combines sustainable full-spectrum hemp CBD oil with a unique ancient Asian herbal formula, beeswax, almond oil, ginger root, camphora essential oil, and additional natural botanicals. Kannaway Salve is made with all-natural ingredients only– no additives or dyes are used! It comes in a handy 1.3-ounce jar with a total of 500 mg of CBD.”

The source of the CBD in this salve is from their full spectrum hemp oil. It also contains Vitamins A B C D and E as well as Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

This salve can be applied directly to tired or sore muscles. Like after a tough day at work or a hard workout. It is also good for moisturizing and rejuvenating trouble areas of your skin. Kannaway salve can be used for sun damaged skin and sunburn relief. Some people have also reported relief from arthritis pain and inflammation. Reports also claim relief from Eczema and Psoriasis.

Like most CBD products there has not been a lot of testing done and because of this, the FDA does not approve of claims being made as to products efficacy. Like with all products related to your health, it is always wise to consult with your doctor before trying. Some studies have been done and there are lots of anecdotal evidence claimed.

Conclusion

This salve is a very good product which I myself use on an almost daily basis. It helped with dry skin on elbows and with relief from muscular pain for me. This was the first CBD product that I tried. Mostly for the fact that it was topical and not ingested. I’ve since moved on to where I take CBD every day as a supplement and must say that I personally feel better for it. Review

For the purpose of this article, I’m reviewing one product which is their premium cannabidiol blend, Pure Gold. This is a broad spectrum hemp oil rich in CBD with only a trace amount of THC (less than 0.3%). I should mention here that you cannot get high from this product. Also, it is federally legal as it contains less than 0.3% THC (THC being the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant).

This is a great dietary supplement that helps with a lot of wellness issues. From personal experience I can say that it really helped with my anxiety, stress and sleep. Of note here, is that in 2019 Pure Gold was the first CBD product to be included in the Prescriber’s Digital Reference (PDR). Also, known as the Physicians Desk Reference, this is an invaluable resource to support the prescribing decisions of health professionals.

I am using a scale of 1-10 to rate this product in the following categories. Quality, Safety, Labeling, Price and Charity.

  • Quality: I give it a 10 out of 10 for its non GMO and chemical cultivation. As well as the CO2 extraction process.
  • Safety: Also, 10 out of 10 for the industry leading triple testing by independent labs.
  • Labeling: I give it an 8 out of 10. The labeling is clear on the amount of CBD contained in the bottle as well as an idea of dosage. I think they could have done a better job listing the other beneficial ingredients as well.
  • Price: I give it an 8 out of 10 as compared to the prices of its competitors similar products.
  • Charity: 10 out of 10 for the wonderful work of Echo Connection in giving back to the community.

Kannaway’s Pure Gold scores 46 out of 50 from me.

Conclusion

I would say that Kannaway’s Pure Gold is probably the premium CBD oil product on the market. Not only do you get the highest quality CBD with the least impurities. But the labeling ensures that you know what and how much you are getting. Even though it is more expensive, I believe that is a small downside when compared to the quality of the product. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the packaging is also made from Hemp cardboard! My verdict on this is that it is a totally legit product.
